BCCI Announces No Opening Ceremony for IPL 2026; Grand Closing Ceremony Planned

(Press release, 26 March , Navneet Bansal, Newsroom 7) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced that there will be no opening ceremony for IPL 2026 as a mark of respect for the victims of the tragic stampede incident that took place in Bengaluru on June 4, 2025, which claimed 11 lives.

The opening match of the tournament will proceed without any pre-match celebrations on March 28. Royal Challengers Bengaluru will face Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, marking the start of the season in a subdued manner.
In line with this decision, the BCCI will not host any cultural or entertainment program prior to the opening fixture, honoring the memory of those who lost their lives in last year’s tragedy.
However, the Indian Premier League Governing Council, in coordination with the BCCI, is planning a grand closing ceremony on May 31, 2026, considering with the tournament final. The closing event is expected to feature large-scale entertainment and celebrations.
BCCI Secretary Deva jit Saikia confirmed the development, stating that the decision reflects the board’s commitment to paying tribute while also ensuring a memorable conclusion to the tournament.
